At the Frankfurt Motor Show 2019, Audi takes visitors on a journey through current and future sustainability concepts in the automotive industry. Under the event slogan “Discover your freedom” we’ve staged a journey into the future.

The new trade show concept focuses on Audi’s innovative spirit and sustainable vision for the future of mobility. Via social media photo opportunities, visitors are transformed into explorers and communicators.

The Audi definition of mobility of tomorrow

Even the mediatecture follows the Audi vehicle design and draws visitors into the future of Audi. And with the e-tron customer journey on full display, Audi’s vision for electromobility is both informative and emotional. Which serves a distinct purpose: Visitors leave with a clear impression of what electro mobility feels like both today and in the future.

The trade show visitor as explorer and communicator

Of course, Audi knows that the potential reach of its stand extends further than its impressive futuristic core. So what better way to get engagement levels up then turn visitors into messengers as explorers and communicators? On either side of the stand, huge-scale product display windows act as eyecatchers—drawing visitors into the stand and into their spell.

Behind them, the vehicles are authentically staged in their various worlds — tempting visitors to take photos and share them on their channel of choice.

Brand Interaction

The customer isn’t there just to find out about new products. They are also there to absorb information in all senses of the word. And share it if they want. The Audi shop windows offer us a first glimpse into how experiential platforms will start to change.

Our Audi shop system first debuted at the dealer meeting in Marbella in January 2019 and was used for the second time at this year’s IAA. Convincing design in combination with a modular concept promise absolute flexibility in every location.

Church as a heart
of the community

New definition of a Monastery church

The location where the church Klosterkirche Thalbürgel was built has a long and important history. A history that reaches back to the ice age, a soul formed by the lives of the local residents, the potential to become a lively meeting point, a hub of modern life. This location needs to be redefined, a spatial and functional extension, to provide the right setting for all the different events it pays host to. The distinctive architectural character of the building should be reinforced, generating renewed interest and drawing more visitors to visit this special place. SCHMIDHUBER worked closely with the local authorities in Thalbürgel to develop a concept that builds on the church’s special function as a gathering place for the community and lays a new foundation for the future; fertile soil for more creative ideas.

A vision can generate power. It just takes a shared dream and the seeds of an idea to take root. That’s when the inconceivable can become a reality.

Open to all

The church was built in the Romanesque style from 1133 as the minster for a Benedictine monastery, and a community of monks lived and worshipped here until the reformation. Today the church serves as a place of worship for both the Protestant and Catholic diocese, as well as hosting concerts and exhibitions. It plays a crucial role in the region as a multidenominational meeting place, open to people of all faiths. Its active role is a demonstration of the community’s vision – a symbol of openness and an invitation to discussion that must also be represented in the new development’s design

A new church – a new meeting place

The roof of the new structure wraps around the pre-existing building, hanging like a silk scarf ruffled by the wind. Its curves echo the surrounding landscape, offering a counterpoint to the church itself and reinforcing the characteristic elements of the location: the portico, the cloister and the atrium.

Open design

It was a conscious decision to choose a modern visual style in order to open a new, organically formed chapter in the church’s history. The structure is designed in wood, planned and constructed using the latest technology. It’s a new interpretation of a traditional, sustainable raw material. The structure is open to light and air, a blurring of the line between interior and exterior space. These soft borders invite people to step inside and engage in discussion without barriers. And this open design is not purely a communicative decision: by using building materials only in those places where it is absolutely necessary, resource consumption was kept to a minimum.

We considered a number of proposals but ultimately, the young, international design team from SCHMIDHUBER presented a compelling idea that won us over. Thanks to their great commitment and excellent communication, this idea could be developed further by a local team and come to fruition in all its glory.

Digital transformation at Trumpf’s trade fair appearance at Euroblech

In fact, we all are. Whether it is via Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp – the internet makes connections possible. This connectivity isn’t restricted to social media and messaging tools though. It flows over into industry, modern mechanical engineering as well as interactive architecture and communication planning.

Digitality at Trumpf

It is this topic in particular and the broader arena of digital transformation which play a fundamental role for our customer TRUMPF. Whether this be in product development or production optimization in SMART FACTORIES, everything is becoming not only significantly faster and more efficient, but also more personal, flexible and transparent.

It was this thinking which drove the planning and design process for the exhibition stand at Euroblech 2018. Covering an area of almost 2,500 m² over two floors, we consolidated and expanded on our stand and communication concept from 2016 and offered an interactive presentation to showcase the product developments of the Swabian company.

The focus lay clearly on the pervasive theme of “connectivity”. The aim was to create a natural interplay between man and technology in order to win, inform and convince trade show visitors with a multi-dimensional, palpable, multi-faceted stand.

A networked production environment enables a smart factory. And artificial intelligence is the key to increasing productivity.

Digital Hub

Interactive service stations allowed visitors to freely explore the TRUMPF brand and the entire product range. From graphics to films to texts and technical data sheets – the intuitive touch technology and self-explanatory apps enabled every trade show visitor to access the information they wanted. The digital hub developed by SCHMIDHUBER left nothing to be desired.

Trumpf has thought of everything

Utilizing Track&Trace technology, TRUMPF is able to offer an exact and robust solution for indoor positioning and has received an award in the “Digital Transformation” category for its positioning system. Based on ultra-wideband technology (UWB), this system uses satellites to determine the precise position of markers in real time.

An interplay of analogue and digital

Despite all the technology, when it comes to the stand architecture TRUMPF never loses sight of the central premise: The customer is at the heart of everything. Offering an Easy Order Bar, an exciting show, and help stations with real-life TRUMPF experts on hand for personal consultation, the stand has been designed to facilitate personal contact, which in turn allows opportunity to jointly shape the future and develop solutions.

Interpersonal processes are enhanced by virtual networking. At TRUMPF, this is called TruConnect! This is where machine tools, laser technologies and people come together, culminating in one cohesive presence which translates TRUMPF’s ongoing digital transformation into communication and space.

The pure joy of water

Power and beauty of water in the digital age

GROHE used their stand at the ISH to present their broad product range and position themselves as a leading producer of high-end water systems. Under the banner WATER.INTELLIGENCE.ENJOYMENT, visitors were welcomed into the world of water in the forum of the Frankfurt Trade Fair Center.

Water. Intelligence. Enjoyment.

Suitably refreshed, visitors continue into an open-plan GROHE foyer, full of media content, from where they have an overview of the different product sections. Seven spaces spread out from the center like the points of a star, each one containing the products from a different GROHE Channel.

Here, we took a look at the analytics on visitor movements and tracked individual journeys around the trade show. The result was a particularly striking presence based on spectral alignment: Visitors were able to experience the entire GROHE product world intuitively and were always led back to the center that connects everything.

GROHE product world

Visitors can move freely from one room into the next through the open side walls, and they are drawn into the center of each new space, to come into contact with a new GROHE product world. The design invites visitors to move intuitively from one space to the next, where the range and quality of the products on display leaves a lasting impression of the values of the GROHE brand.

Beauty of water for the new digital age

In the center of the foyer, a creative installation gives an overview of all the new products on display throughout the GROHE world. A thick curtain of rain surrounds a central display, and the water splits and parts to offer a glimpse of the products pictured within, as well as the slogan WATER.INTELLIGENCE.ENJOYMENT. It illustrates the continual expansion of the GROHE portfolio, and the innovative interplay of visuals and falling water demonstrates in a very clear way the technical excellence of the brand.

Sony’s diverse product range fulfills every heart’s desire and for the IFA 2018, SCHMIDHUBER have developed an experience path that intuitively guides the visitor through this varied offer. Clear lines and visual angles direct the visitor without distracting from the focal point of this exhibition: A technological experience with a wealth of possibilities for day-to-day living.

The product variety of Sony

The change in atmosphere is also palpable, with clearly defined areas each offering a perceptible experience.
From the current camera releases to the latest XPERIA mobile phones, from the robot dog, Aibo, to TV and audio – Sony has become an integral part of the lives of its customers.

For the IFA, we developed a multi-sensory experience that intuitively guided visitors through a diverse range of products and services. Clear lines and axes ensured focus was directed onto the essential—the technology and its numerous applications in everyday life.

Four focus topics of Audi in an experience walk

Audi’s exhibition at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show is raising the bar for innovative live communication: before visitors get to see the full range of Audi automobiles on offer at the center of the brand building, they are led through an impressive presentation of the four focus themes: Audi ultra, Audi Technologies, quattro and Audi Sport. “the power of four.”

Never have we developed a trade show appearance as thematically stringent as this one. And never have we been able to demonstrate Audi’s innovations in such detail, as at the IAA 2015. And yet at the same time visitor’s were offered a more powerful experience than ever before. The connection between both is quite unique.

Experience
Walk

The ‘experience walk’ begins as visitors enter the building on an escalator through a delicate, organic network structure that grows from the facade of the building. It’s a lightweight ultra structure in 3D, and the beginning of the voyage of discovery. Visitors experience the advantages of lightweight construction, efficient engines and alternative fuels.

A room temperature of -21°c creates a world carved out of ice that illustrates the branding and lifestyle of Audi quattro. By contrast, the next section Audi Sport uses sound and visual cues to recreate the high-octane atmosphere of the racetrack and draw the eye to the motorsport icon Audi R18 at the end, turning on a banked curve and leading visitors to their right, down to the automobile exhibition area.

360° Brand Communication

“the power of four” is presented on four enormous media screens, each one with a real car mounted on the screen, and moving to interact with the virtual story told on the screen beneath it. Lighting, media and movement present each car in a constantly changing and developing story to illustrate each of the four key themes, picked out by the roving compass needle in the center of the hall.

Live communication has created a shift in perspective. It’s increasingly important to establish diverse attitudes to a brand and its products. And in so doing to speak to target groups in a differentiated way.

>>the power of four<< does exactly that: Here, visitors experience Audi’s four focus themes by means of an “Experience Walk”—encountering the brand and product in perfect harmony. This effectively turns the communication principle on its head. Favoring an emotional approach to demonstrating the Audi brand’s competitive edge.

360° experience for Samsung

Staging the new LED TV and its abstract qualities as ultra “flat”, „brillant“, „eco“. Samsung’s trade-fair presence is shaped by a new TV generation – LED TV. A magnetic entry setting fusing space, audio and video components is devised as a crowd-puller in Hall 20.

360° spatial experience

Eight semi-circular “leaves” that towered upwards and contained LED TVs are arranged to give rise to as a “cathedral of entertainment electronics” by the precise use of mirrored surfaces. The changing lights and colors of the media displays reflect the attributes “color brilliance” and “motion sharpness” in a 360° spatial experience.

With the Samsung Monument, we were able to bring everything together: a spatial communication of the brand message, a surprising on-site user experience, and a clear, distinctive big picture. The result was a playful interaction between perspective and illusion. The Samsung Monument was the talk of the exhibition, making the front pages of the “Berliner Tageszeitung” and the “Berliner Morgenpost.”

Illusion and reality melt into one

Light blinds inset into the floor and A/V screening forge a bridge to the product presentation. The plain volume of the white exhibition architecture and the wraparound element of the blue horizon form a calm backdrop to the other Samsung products on display.

Simply well made

Modular and lively brand concept for Constructa

SCHMIDHUBER have designed a new brand presence for Constructa, at the LivingKitchen in Cologne. Constructa produce built-in kitchen appliances that are high-performance, comfortable and user-friendly. With their slogan “simply well made,” Constructa appeal to a young target audience that know how to appreciate top quality and uncomplicated design.

Backdrop of stacked boxes

The Constructa slogan ‘simply well made’ was the springboard for the conceptual design. Presenting this idea in a clear and uncomplicated way that was still visually arresting transports visitors to a living kitchen where they can feel right at home.

Even from a distance, one thing stands out about the trade fair stand and the product presentation area: it is all made of cardboard. This warm surface structure and the bright mix of colors create a friendly, inviting atmosphere right from the word go. This flexible diamond shape allows the products in the three areas of “cooking”, “cooling” and “cleaning” to be presented in a playful way.

Modular flexibility

Far away from a rigid fitted kitchen, the products are presented as living islands, and against the abstract background of the stand’s structure, the appliances appear in surprising ways. The backdrop of stacked boxes serves to underline the modular flexibility of Constructa appliances, and speaks to a young, fresh kitchen design.

This project was a source of great pleasure for the client, us and trade fair visitors. Based on a simple idea, we created a coherent spatial, graphic and communication concept, that came together seamlessly in terms of its final appearance.

Original graphic language

The brand presence is completed with a graphic language developed by SCHMIDHUBER. With simple means a maximum depth of information is generated: Color-coded icons mark the different product and exhibition areas. Colored decoration elements in complimentary tones evoke everyday kitchen life and contribute to the approachable character of the living kitchen. Every intricate detail implicitly highlights: “Simply well made!”
