Talk with
Frederick Schultz
You were already a student trainee at SCHMIDHUBER. How did you experience your time with us back then?
I had a great time right from the start and experienced an open-minded and collegial working culture. It was never about who came up with the bright idea for a concept or design or how long you had been to SCHMIDHUBER, but only that you’re enthusiastic in what you do.
And what ultimately made you to come back and stay?
The prospect of exciting, varied projects together with great people – I think that’s the SCHMIDHUBER spirit.
Spaces are increasingly charged with content and communication. This makes a project challenging, but at the same time of course also exciting and profound.

Do you have the impression that project work has changed in recent years? For you but also in general?
Over the years, conception and design phases have become much shorter and clear definitions of goals have also been shifted into the unknown. Today I notice consistently that our task has changed more to consulting. Together with the client, we have to clearly define the goals at the beginning and during the process and check them again and again. To question what really needs to be communicated.
What do you mean in particular?
With an equal complexity of projects, “communication” plays a significant role alongside architecture. Spaces are increasingly charged with content and communication. This makes a project challenging, but at the same time of course also exciting and profound.
You were promoted to Design Director this year. Congratulations! Was it worth the effort? 😉
Without any doubts! 😉
Seriously: You’ve had a steep career at SCHMIDHUBER and have been an important support in the Audi team for years. Do you feel that your influence and effectiveness has changed again with the new title?
It has of course brought a change since the day as a working student when you present projects directly to the customer. With this knowledge, you can set completely different priorities and recognize what is important forthe customers and people. Of course, managing colleagues in terms of time and especially in terms of design was new – but you grow with your tasks.
What have been your biggest professional challenges so far?
For me, the biggest challenge every time is to live up to my own standards. Of course, the implementation of the client’s ideas is in the focus but in a great team we manage that again and again in every project.
Above all, a functioning, respectful, humorous team contributes the most to daily satisfaction.
Frederick Schultz | Design Director at SCHMIDHUBER
What were you’re highlights so far?
Definitely seeing a planned and designed project live and on site. Recognizing that hours of computer work become a real space that inspires and sometimes even connects people, whether for professional reasons or on an emotional level – that’s amazing.
Do you have a favourite project?
The Audi Sport launch in a car park for the 2019 dealer meeting at the famous Ascari race track. A bit of black light and typography – bingo!
And of course our Audi – House of Progress series, so stay tuned for more to come!
What does happiness at work mean to you?
Having a good time together with a cool team and also creating outstanding projects.
Where is you’re happy place when you’re not at the SCHMIDHUBER office?
Definitely on a downhill bike – in the Black Forest, Switzerland, Austria or Italy, Europe or anywhere else in the world.
Do you think that job satisfaction comes from following your dream?
To a certain extent, yes. In the best case you have chosen your profession according to your passion and interest. But above all, a functioning, respectful, humorous team contributes the most to daily satisfaction, in my opinion.
What’s next to come?
A walk at the Nymphenburger Canal around the corner and many more amazing projects.
